10th December 2006 - Bernado's Preasent Bike Run

For 30 minutes (or longer!) each year, traffic outside the Pheasant Inn at Winnersh is stopped twoard Wokingham. Usually 2 weeks before Christmas, a large procession of motorcycles with riders from every walk of life make the annual trip from Reading to the Dr Bernados home for childern in Wokingham. Bearing gifts for all of the children, the leather brigade dress in all manner of costumes (fairies included!) and festively decorate their various bikes.

One of the greatest philanthropists of Victorian England, Doctor Thomas John Barnardo, honoured the County of Russell by selecting it as the site of one of his two great Training Homes in Canada. Many men and women living in Russell today remember well the Home as it was in the early years of this century — some indeed, came to Canada under the auspices of the Dr. Barnardo Foundation. The story of this Foundation, of its inception and of the remarkable contribution made by it to this land, is one of the most heartwarming stories of our time.

The annual motorbike convoy is watched by hundreds of well wishers along the 10 mile journey. In 2006, the number of bike was estimated at 3,500!!!.

The dedication of this band of bikers is to be applauded and long may it continue on behalf of the needy children of wokingham.
